By the time the decade of the 90's were upon us, walks, demos, barbecues, outings, meals, dances, M.C.ing at Cecil Sharp House, Christmas parties and Folk Safaris were regular yearly features.
The decade saw the arrival of our new Italian costume, a picture with Kelly Holmes and the celebration of our 25th Anniversary year and our 30th anniversary year. (pause for breath and read on...)

1990 - Carry On As Usual

Another meal out, our second, and again it was at the Royal Oak. In the scrap book it says “It was a very good evening – I’m sure we all ate and drank more than was good for us.”

Spring Dance. A good dance but rather thin on the ground.

Visit to the Eastbourne Festival. A good day out and some new dances were learnt.

Walk in the vicinity of Holly Hill, Laura had a good sleep in the backpack.

Folk Safari with Merton Park. Venues were Wrotham, West Peckham, Roydon Hall and Beltring Hop Farm. At the hop farm we stroked the Shire horses, saw the birds of prey and just wandered around.

Borough Green Carnival. We wore Norwegian costume and as well as doing a demo and running a sideshow, we also walked in the procession. It was Jonathan’s debut

Embankment Gardens. We shared the stage with Merton and did Dreisteirer as a solo spot (one trio in Norwegian costume, one in Italian and one in Balkan).

Day out to Dover Castle. A pleasant day with lots to see apart from the castle – archery, dancing, juggling and the recently opened Hellfire corner. Unfortunately nobody took the statuary picture of our picnic lunch.

1991 - More Weddings

February? – we delivered some publicity leaflets around West Kingsdown, but we don’t think there was any response.

Orchard theatre Dartford to see the Czechoslovak State Song and Dance Ensemble. A very good evening.

March – The Balkan costumes are virtually complete so we had a photo shoot.

Spring Dance. Alison was back in England and she was there with Ernst, both in Austrian costume.

Walk around the Penshurst area. David & Kathryn were late, so they did their own little walk.

Demo at Bewl Water in Balkan costume. Although we had a trio of Balkan costumes at Embankment Gardens, this was the first time we had everybody in a demo in Balkan costume.

Service of Blessing for Alison & Ernst Maas. They were actually married in Abu Dhabi last December, but this was a service for friends and family.

Surprise, surprise, the annual barbecue. Alan & Jenny’s again, but this time it has gone up from £1 to £2!! It was rather wet so there was no dancing, so instead we watched Alison & Ernst’s wedding video.

Christopher Mckie is born.

Tea & Dance at Alan & Jenny’s, with dancing on the lawn. This was to make up for the lack of dancing at the barbecue. Alan & Jenny provided a basic tea and we supplied an extra item each.

Julie Cant & Julian Roberts get married at The Church Of The Good Shepherd, Borough Green.

Jonathan Atkinson & Helen Welbourne get married at West Malling Baptist Church, West Malling.
Autumn dance, so most of Woodvale had to leave the wedding to come back for the dance.

Culverstone W.I. Demo. A good evening and apparently there were no mishaps!! Israeli costume.

Christmas party, the usual mix of live music, old friends and good food.
1992 - Seven Strikes For Dot !!

We did a demo in Balkan costume at the Medau Rally. There were other displays, but they were all keep fit routines. Medau is a music and movement form of exercise using hoops, balls and clubs etc. It has been going since the war.

Spring Dance were we showed off a newly learnt French dance Makil Tiki.

Some of the group went to Minigrads (junior Borograds) to teach them a few dances.

Demo at Lingfield Hospital Fete. This was a joint venture with Merton Park. There was a long gap between our two spots, and they kept making announcements whilst we were dancing. We were in Norwegian costume and Merton wore a mixture of countries.

Folk safari with Merton Park. Bessels Green, Bradbourne Lakes, Eynsford Castle and Otford. The weather was too hot for dancing.

Barbecue, but with a change of venue, Sylvia’s garden (well actually house as it was raining). As we couldn’t dance outside, we watched videos of recent demos.

Christmas meal/ten pin bowling. Actually it was a ten pin bowling evening which included food. David had the highest score over two frames, but Dot got 7 strikes!!

25th Anniversary dance. We conferred life membership on Eileen Nolan who was one of the founder members. A very packed evening both programme wise and people wise with a big turnout of past members.

September – Demo at Lavenders Old Peoples’s Home in West Malling. Part of the “European Year of older people and solidarity between generations.” Austrian costume and including joining in. It started off on the lawn with a very threatening sky, and after a few dances the rain came so we adjourned to the marquee. Not all the residents could get to the marquee so we did an impromptu encore in the lounge.

Sevenoaks Cycle Race and Fair Day. A change of style for the Sevenoaks Town Fayre, but it wasn’t as good as previous years. There was a degree of last minute re-arrangements as we were struck by illness. It was so bad that we ended up doing Jämptpolska with 4 couples and not 5.

Outing to Dungeness Power station then the beach at Greatstone-on-sea. Another lovely hot day. Whilst the children played in the sand, the adults sat and soaked up the sun, played boules or swam.

Eridge Country Fair demo in French and then Norwegian costume. The first session went well, but we had to cut the second session short when the rain set in as there was no cover for the spectators. Laura Cant made her debut in a demo.

Outing to Richborough Castle and Joss bay. At Richborough Castle we saw a Roman legion, 5th Century soldiers and Saxon raiders. Bad weather meant that we were eating our picnic lunch in a tent, and it looked like it was set in for the day. Some people went home early, and the rest decided to abandon the thought of going to Joss bay and went 10 pin bowling in Cliftonville instead. A good decision as it was great fun.

Borough Green Brownies. Linda, Dot and Sharon taught the Brownies 3 English dances which they really seemed to enjoy.

Christmas meal Crown Point Inn Seal. 20 of us enjoyed a real good evening out.

1998 - Our 30th Anniversary Year

1998 was our 30th Anniversary year so we arranged some special celebrations. A 20th Anniversary Dance in April and a 30th Anniversary Reunion in October.

Alan & David (The Gruesome Twosome) M.C.’d at Cecil Sharp House. The dances on the programme were colour coded as follows….
Yellow – Easy peasy lemon squeezy,
Green – If you know your left from your right you can do it,
Orange – Brain power needed for these,
Blue – Only for those who know how to do it,
Pink – Don’t attempt unless your insurance is up to date.
The dances ranged from Ambee Dageets (yellow) to Untersteirer Landler (pink).

30th Anniversary spring dance. During the morning Ian & Jean Willson taught us some new lively dances. About 60 guests attended the evening dance M.C.’d by Ian, Heather, Jan, Alan and David. Mihai’s Romanian group Martisorul gave us a display in the interval. Presentations were done to mark the occasion, (including Life membership to Rita Wood), and later on a very complimentary write up in the SIFD news from Heather Edwards.

30th Anniversary Social evening. An evening to meet up with members old and new, see a video of the group in action, look at the groups memorabilia and do a little dancing (we also demo’d Joc Cu Sucitoare and a few other newer dances). A very successful evening thanks to a lot of hard work behind the scenes beforehand. We received lots of thank you notes afterwards.

Dot has finished the 10 petticoats that can be worn with either the Italian costumes from Bormio or the Austrian costumes from Wipptal.

Spring Dance. A last minute change of venue as the Borough Green Village Hall was unavailable. We managed to get the Memorial Hall in St. Mary’s Platt. Disappointing turnout.
