SCAT (Sevenoaks Community Arts & Theatre CIC) was established informally in Spring 2006 by users of the Stag Theatre and was formally incorporated as a Community Interest Company on 16 June 2006.
While it was formed initially in a bid to help save Sevenoaks Playhouse Limited, Stag Theatre closed in July 2006 and it became apparent that SCAT would need to campaign for its re-opening and position itself as an essential partner for any new operator seeking to make a success of the venue.
Following a second failure in July 2008, SCAT has gained new members and now covers the wider area of West Kent.
Currently, SCAT is working with Sevenoaks Town Council (STC)which has been awarded a 25 year lease by Sevenoaks District Council (SDC), and re-opened the Stag in 2009 as "The Stag Community Arts Centre". Having assisted with staffing for the first show in January (Sevenoaks Entertainers' traditional family pantomime "Cinderella and the Glass Slipper"), and producing the mixed "Pro-Am" Re-opening Gala Celebration in April, SCAT and its members are now actively working to make STAG a thriving, sustainable, long-term venue. SCAT member groups' bookings for 2009 accounted for some 160 days hiring. Reservations for 2010 currently exceed 170 days and for 2011 150 days and counting!!
SCAT produces a regular Events Guide that lists events and shows staged by member groups of SCAT - at The STAG and elsewhere - and the current edition can be downloaded from this site.
Membership is open to all local groups and others with the shared interest of developing arts and arts facilities in Sevenoaks and willing to support SCAT's objectives and activities. The annual subscription is currently £5 for which Members obtain publicity for their events, discounts from the normal hire rates for The STAG, and a network of contacts to canvass for volunteer support.
To apply for or renew membership, please go to the relevant page, read through the formal documents and the "Criteria and Obligations" note, then download the applicable form.
